You might have eaten Meethi Seviyan, Doodh Wali Seviyan and even Vegetable Vermicelli Pulao, but have you ever tasted this remix of semiya with South Indian tadka? Semiya Upma is a delicious dish that can be served for breakfast, lunch and even dinner. It can be prepared in less than 30 minutes and is a wholesome meal in itself. You just need vermicelli, a handful of veggies and some spices to make this upma dish. Be it summers or winters, this Semiya Upma can be prepared anytime. The addition of peanuts and cashews add a rich texture to this dish.

We have added some basic veggies to the dish, however, you can customize the recipe as per your taste by adding veggies of your choice and making it more nutrtious. Be it kids or adults, everyone will love this recipe for sure. You can pack this dish in your kid’s tiffin or serve it to them as an evening snack.

How to make Semiya Upma

Step 1 – Prepare the tadka

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, dry red chilli, curry leaves and finely chopped green chillies. Let the ingredients crackle for a minute.

Step 2 – Saute the veggies

Now add chopped onions and saute them for two minutes. Also add chopped carrot, green beans and capsicum. Saute for a minute and season with salt as per taste.

Step 3 – Let the semiya cook

Add semiya along with 1 cup of water. Cover the pan with a lid and let it cook on medium flame.

Step 4 – Fry the peanuts and cashews

Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp oil in a separate pan. Add peanuts and cashews. Fry them till they turn golden brown in colour.

Step 5 – Final prep

Once the vermicelli absorbs all the water, it is ready to be served. Add peanuts, cashews and black pepper powder. Give a final mix.

Step 6 – Ready to be served

Your delicious Semiya Upma is now ready to be served.

  • 1/2 cup vermicelli
  • 1 medium capsicum (green pepper)
  • 10 green beans
  • 2 stalks curry leaves
  • 1 dry red chili
  • 1/4 tablespoon powdered black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon raw peanuts
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • salt as required
  • 2 tablespoon virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoon cashews
